21st Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act
Tuesday, July 26th, 2011 marked the 21st anniversary of the Americans with disabilities Act. When President George bush signed the ADA on July, 26th, 1990, he stated that the signing of the act meant that, "every man, woman and child with a disability can now pass through once-closed doors into a bright new era of equality, independence and freedom."
While the technological strides that have been made since 1990 have enabled those with physical disabilities to have a longer life, the quality of that life has remained largely the same.
This is why Camp Craig Allen is so important. The purpose of Camp Craig Allen is to empower individuals to overcome obstacles by giving them hands-on experience, an opportunity to share resources and above all, remember that we are all humans.
While the final goal of Camp Craig Allen is a huge one, each time a person donates their time, money or resources, we are that much closer to reaching our goal through one camper, one dollar and one event at a time.
We hope you take this 21st anniversary as a time to reflect on how far we as a nation have come, and how far we must go to ensure people with disabilities have all the same opportunities as those without.
Welcome, Canine Companions
We will be welcoming canine companions to our BBQ event this year to advocate and provide resources for disabled individuals looking for a service dog. They train and provide these highly skilled service dogs free of charge to the recipients. Beth and her group will be on hand with some great information regarding their services.
This is an awesome opportunity to bring our non-profit organizations together to advocate on independence. Many of the furry companions for our Camp Craig Allen friends have come from Canine Companions and we are proud to support each other!
Please check them out at www.cci.org.
