Camp Craig Allen successfully held Inaugural Camp
Session
for Young Adults with Muscular Dystrophy!
Our
vision has always been one of a wheelchair accessible/barrier-free
camp with no age limit. It started with Craig's dream
and has been feverishly worked on since Camp Craig Allen
formed officially in 2007 as a 501c3 organization.
With
tireless volunteers, 5 years of fundraising, and an unsteady
economy, it was time to move forward and accomplish some
of our goals… at least the goal of getting “overlooked”
adults to camp.
We
just couldn’t wait any longer for millions to fall from
the sky to build our own facility. It was now, with an
opportunity from another…
On
June 24, 2011 in Anna, Texas, Camp Craig Allen leased
a facility so we could start camp programs immediately.
With help from a few of our Sponsors, we brought in a
lot of medical equipment, borrowed adaptive vehicles with
lifts and ramps, built ramps, and asked for food donations,
invited campers, brought in tireless volunteers and we
did it, we had camp!
Our very first camp session appropriately named "Camp
Reunion”, served the first set of overlooked physically
disabled campers, those with Muscular Dystrophy, and those
which are young adults over the age of 18.
At this camp facility, we modified programs, adapted the
environment best we could and we had a great weekend which
was a huge success.
From fishing, power wheelchair hockey, swimming, arts
& crafts, spa corner, and even nightly camp fire rings,
we crammed in all we could do in a weekend of fun.
Our mission is to provide advocacy to the physically disabled
and their families. We provided first hand, to have faith,
love life, and most of all to have HOPE, no what the physical
disability.
Beginning of our special camp programs, allows us to continue
forward in our mission and change lives.
You, our followers, our supporters, our friends, our families
and most of all-our Campers- made this inaugural camp
session spectacular and it’s just the beginning!
Camp Craig Allen sessions will include summer camp sessions
June-August and fall sessions October-December and we
will wrap up the 2011 calendar year at Collin County Adventure
Camp in Anna, Texas. We will keep everyone posted of the
upcoming camp sessions.
Invitations will be sent to adult campers to attend customized
camp sessions for Muscular Dystrophy, MS, Parkinson's,
Spina Bifida and Spinal Cord Injury folks, to begin with.
There will be family sessions in the Fall too.
A Camper form, Camp Volunteer form and Camp Sponsorship
are available on our website. We ask that you continue
to pray for our organization, help out in the many areas
of need and become a part of our organization at the most
important time for Camp Craig Allen.
We still plan to build, but right now, it is about the
campers. What we can accomplish with where we are right
now.
